James Henry Miller (25 January 1915 – 22 October 1989), [1] better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was a British folk singer-songwriter, folk song collector, labour activist and actor.

As a songwriter, MacColl is best known as the writer of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Dirty Old Town, The Shoals of Herring, Freeborn Man, The Manchester Rambler and The Joy of Living.
