iMac Firewire 400 and 800 ports--same bus--what does it mean for speed?

My iMac (new, 3.06 GHz 24") has a FW 800 and a FW 400. I have heard they share the same bus, which, like my MBP, I understand to mean that if there is a FW 400 device attached, it slows FW 800 to 400.
